In “The Ludocrats,” those who are seen as boring won’t make it very far. The crazier and more nonsensical a person is, the more respected. Readers meet main characters, Hades and Otto, two completely zany actors in this wacky and at times confusing story at a fanciful wedding. They are guests at this especially strange wedding where once the vows have been made the groom is instantly decapitated. This is one of those confusing moments. Otto spots Grattina, a high-profile judge who is into some questionable side activities and instantly falls head over heels for her. Unfortunately for him, she is arrested before he gets his chance to make an impression. It then comes to light that a mysterious character named “High-Pope” of the land who happens to be the brother of Otto was supposed to be a guest at the wedding, but he sent guards to arrest Grattina instead. Just who is this “High-Pope” and what exactly is he up to?
The remaining four issues follow Otto and his friends on their journey to rescue Grattina and uncover the secret plot of his brother. This volume collects the entire series and is perfect for fans of the series “I Hate Fairyland” by Skottie Young. Kieron Gillen and Jim Rossignol have comprised a wildly insane world where nothing makes sense and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Readers may be familiar with Gillen due to his highly popular series, “The Wicked and the Divine” or his run on “Star Wars: Darth Vader.” Fantasy readers looking for a random journey into pointless theatrics will find exactly what they are looking for in these pages. The illustrations by Jeff Stokely and Tamra Bonvillian are over the top, extremely animated and work in unison with the kookiness of the story perfectly , and the coloring is so well done that every single page is eye catching. It’s time to get ludicrous!
