Graphic Novel Review: Lost Soldiers

War is hell. Often, the men and women who fight in them aren’t the same when they return. This story shows readers how the wartime experience affects soldiers differently. Kot has created a grim wartime story set post-Vietnam War in Mexico, with flashbacks to horrific tragedies from the war that have left the characters brutally scarred, mentally and physically. Sergeant Kowalski and Private Hawkins are two young men fighting in Vietnam. During a firefight their close friend Berg is struck by enemy projectiles and instantly killed due to a call made by their staff sergeant, Burke. After this event their lives would never be the same. The rest of the story focuses on how Kowalski and Hawkins handled the death and their lives post-war, showing how they carry the wounds from the war long after their service is over.

In this thrilling, page turner, Kot gives readers a striking account of the damage inflicted on soldiers by opposition and friendlies. This gritty story also tells truths that evoke deep thoughts about PTSD that many soldiers come home with and cope with for the rest of their lives. Kot touches on how PTSD can affect relationships with loved ones after service and shows ways veterans can get help. Casalanguida does an outstanding job providing stark and at times borderline disturbing imagery that provides readers with a vivid account of the story. Fans of war stories and movies will enjoy these panels and pages. However, it is a very authentic telling and may trigger some. This title is a great addition for public libraries and is sure to spark conversation between readers.
