Baron is back with yet another story centered on music. His previous titles include “Paul Is Dead” and “Punk Is Undead: What If Rock Legends Come Back From the Dead?” This time he’s placed legendary front man Jim Morrison of The Doors in his fiction.
In this story, a seemingly deranged man named Jackson swears he’s spotted the iconic singer in Europe, even though he’s supposed to have been dead for decades. This leads him to investigate the strange sighting further and takes him down a rabbit hole that ultimately leads to uncovering a secret organization that has been hired to fake a handful of deaths for high profile celebrities when they are at peak stardom. This group doesn’t take kindly to Jackson’s snooping and hold him captive. His disappearance prompts his father to put together a search party to track down and retrieve his son, no matter what it takes.
The continuity of this story is hard to follow and can be confusing at times. However, the exquisite illustrations by Carbonetti offer redemption and help the reader piece together the events taking place. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t involve Jim Morrison as much as one might expect from the title and cover. Readers interested in reading this because of him may be disappointed, but the allure and mystery of the story may be enough to satisfy. As far as audiences goes, this story works for ages teen and up and would be appropriate for libraries serving this age range.
