Take a dash of punk rock, add a sprinkle of teen angst and top it off with a haunted, murder house and you’ve got the recipe for one heck of a wild story. Watters has crafted an interesting tale that focuses on a group of friends in a band who are torn apart by strange circumstances that are totally out of their control.
Buzz and Rip are looking to start a punk band, but need a guitarist. Enter Ami, a fan of the Ramones and a girl who totally shreds on the guitar. Their meeting each other is completely random, much like the events that take place after their encounter. While looking for a place to hold their next gig, Ami suggests the Old James House, a local residence known by those in the community for its hauntings and the murderous events that have taken place there. Her bandmates are on the fence about the idea, but Ami goes to check it out herself and winds up transformed into a hybrid ghost-human. The house sends her out on missions to retrieve items that have been stolen from it. In the meantime, her friends think she’s disappeared and a secret governmental organization is in the area on the hunt for the group of ghosts residing in the Old James House.
A story full of mysteries and unanswered questions, this book has only shown the tip of the iceberg. Just who are the ghosts haunting the Old James House? What is the true mission of the secret ghost hunting group? And most importantly, what’s going on with Ami? Watters leaves the reader wanting to know more about the stories behind the occurrences in “Home Sick Pilots.” While Wijngaard has exceptionally captured the essence of the characters and ghosts in the illustrations throughout the book. This book is definitely more for a young adult audience and would be a great addition to a high school or public library collection.
