Graphic Novels Reviews: Little Monsters Volume One

Posted on December 5, 2022December 5, 2022

Title: Little Monsters Volume One

Published by: Image Comics

Written by: Jeff Lemire

Illustrated by: Dustin Nguyen

ISBN: 9781534323186

Ages: 16+

The world will end in blood.

The apocalypse has happened, and vampires are the last survivors. A group of eight vampires wait for the elders to return. Forever children, they play the same games every night, hunt rats for food, and sleep through the day. When they discover some humans are alive and camped close to their hideout, their carefully crafted routines and friendships change and wither due to the lure of human blood and a new, ravenous hunger. The vampires will have to choose alliances and decide whether or not to fight their instincts. However, humans are not as vulnerable as the child-vampires may believe. Their choices have bloody consequences.

Little Monsters Volume One is not your average apocalypse graphic novel. This first volume collects issues 1-6. Readers are introduced to the monotony of the vampire lifestyle and the loneliness of the apocalypse. The vampires are as uneasy with routine as they are with change. The narrator becomes a main character, and her impact on the story will affect the vampires’ friendships.

The artist uses color for dramatic effect. The graphic novel is mostly black and white with red and rainbow colors used sparingly for impact. With a diverse cast of characters, the graphic novel is visually appealing, and readers can readily identify with these characters’ appearances and emotional struggles. Older teens and adults will enjoy delving into this world.

Little Monsters Volume One is a cat-and-mouse game of hunt or be hunted that will leave readers salivating for more.

Little Monsters Volume One is recommended for fans of Umbrella Academy, The Walking Dead, and Interview with a Vampire.
