Graphic Novel Reviews: The Fall Volume 1

Muralt’s The Fall Volume 1 collects editions 1-6 of his apocalyptic tale of a widowed father and his two children trying to survive in an uncertain world.

Imagine, if you can, a world beset with socio-political and economic uncertainty that is fighting an unrelenting pandemic. (Well, talk about timely for 2020-2021.) The situation in Muralt’s story is dire, with food scarcity and quarantine zoning patrolled by armed militia. It is a world where the haves and the have-nots are in a literal war with one another.

To say that The Fall was a difficult read does not reflect on the fantastic work Muralt has done with this story and its accompanying illustrations. I felt the cold and I imagined the hunger that would drive people to such lengths. I had to put it down because it scared me – a first for me.

The Fall is rated for older teens, 16 and up. I recommend it for those who like apocalyptic stories of survival.
