Gabriel can’t believe his son and daughter-in-law decided to adopt an orphaned child from Peru – aren’t they too old to be parents? And he’s certainly not cut out to be a grandfather, he barely managed to be a father considering he worked morning to night in his butcher shop for years. But as time goes on, and he spends more time with little Qinaya, he can’t help but fall in love with the little tyke, taking her on outings with his fellow geriatrics, even buying her a bicycle. Then tragedy strikes the family, and Gabriel begins to understand the depths of the love a man can have for a grandchild, and his own children.

In this beautiful and heartfelt graphic novel, author Zidrou will really run readers through the emotional wringer. The sweet relationship between Gabriel and little Qinaya will warm even the coldest hearts, and the twist is a surprise that no one can see coming. This book truly is a masterpiece of fiction – almost a coming of age tale for a man in his 70s, finding himself and his place in the family and in the world. For such a short graphic novel – ending up around 130 pages, the characters all feel so incredibly real and genuine, practically jumping off the page.

Beautifully illustrated, this graphic novel should not be missed. Recommended for readers ages 13 and up, though it will be of interest to adults the most.
