Jack Boniface, AKA Shadowman, is no stranger to Valiant’s comic catalog; he and his loa have been fighting the fight since 1992. Many of us know how intimidating a well-established series can be for readers new to the scene: Where to start is always the first of many questions. Valliant has made that answer easy with Shadowman, this deluxe edition collects issues 1-11 of Andy Diggle’s adventures of Jack and his shadow and allows readers to witness the origins of Shadowman.

The story and action in this comic are fast and exciting, Diggle knows how to move the story along at a great pace. The illustrations that accompany his words are astounding. The depth of expression in the character’s faces and movements, and the attention to detail when presenting the Deadside and other historical times allows readers to get lost, much like Jack. For fans of the Valiant universe, there are name drops and even appearances by beloved characters like Ninjak and Punk Mambo.

This collected comic is best for teens aged 15 and over for violence and some sexual situations. Younger readers may have questions about the religion portrayed in the book. Teen and adult readers who are interested in horror and supernatural stories will be interested in this title.

My interest in all things graphic storytelling began at a young age when my mom used to buy Family Circle and Dennis the Menace collections. I devoured them and especially loved the ones that had the flip-book bonus on the bottom pages! It was love at first flip; ever since then, I have been hooked.
