M.O.M.: Mother of Madness

Written by: Emilia Clarke and Marguerite Bennett

Illustrated by: Leila Leiz and Leila Del Luca

Publisher: Image Comics

Format: Hardcover, 152 pages, Color

ISBN: 9781534320932

Ages: 13 and up

Superstar actress, Emilia Clarke has teamed up with Bennett, Leiz and Del luca to create a progressive, feminest story about a mom who gains different superpowers depending on the mood she is in. Readers will most be familiar with Clarke from her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the insanely popular Game of Thrones series.

Maya Kuyper is a single mom who has gone through many hardships in her life. Both of her parents died when she was young, working on an experimental drug that ultimately gave her her powers. She was in an abusive relationship in her early 20s that led to an unexpected pregnancy. And throughout her entire life she has had to deal with the extremely unfair expectations society places on women. Maya has done all that she can to raise her son to the best of her abilities and to protect those in need of her help when she can. However, now she is up against the evil corporate executive who funded the research that turned her into the superpowered hero she has become and Maya needs all the help she can get!

M.O.M. is both a superhero story and one about what it means to be a mom. The concepts and ideas peppered throughout the narrative are incredibly important, unfortunately at times the story becomes a little confusing because of the outline and pacing. However, fans of Clarke are sure to give it a read when they find out about it due to her name recognition alone. The topics in the story are ones that communities should be talking about and libraries interested in sparking these important conversations would do well to give this book a chance.
