Unicorns as they have never been seen.

Animaniacs meets My Little Pony in this rollicking adventure.

The graphic novel, Loonicorns, takes readers to an alternate world where the sun and moon dropkick each other out of the sky, trees gossip, and unicorns are not as friendly as believed. The main character is Kurb, a sarcastic, disillusioned, and glum unicorn who regularly does the bidding of the Mayor, which usually involves the worst tasks such as cleaning gryphon poo off the city’s floating signs. He and his friends – a Dodo, Uno the Biclyops who is looking for his second eye, and an amnesiac girl with a horn – have a series of misadventures in Looniland. The plot involves three separate quests and an overarching story that ties up the action and character development very well.

Humor is abundant from slapstick to satire. Surprisingly, the narrative deals with contemporary topics and handles them masterfully. Over the course of three quests the friends confront challenges such as recognizing when a stranger is deceptive with false kindness, whether appearances matter most when judging someone, teamwork despite differences in opinions, and trustworthiness after an argument. Although the content is handled in a lighthearted and goofy manner, serious topics of interpersonal relationships are discussed. This graphic novel looks like a children’s book but is a satisfying story for older audiences as well.

The characters look like they belong in a fantasy world like Angry Birds or Plants vs Zombies. They are mostly faces, and they are very emotive.  With zombies, potty humor, and bright pastel colors, this cartoon offers something for the multitudes of readers.

Loonicorns is a fun fantasy filled with humor, sarcasm, and friendship.

For fans of Plants vs Zombies, Angry Birds, and Ugly Dolls
