Graphic Novel Reviews: Dead Day

Posted on March 8, 2021March 15, 2021

Dead Day

Published by: Aftershock Comics
Written by: Ryan Parrot
Illustrated by: Evgeniy Bornyakov
ISBN: 9781949028546
Ages: 15+

Ryan Parrot returns to Aftershock Comics with an action-packed story that takes into consideration what may happen if the dead were only revived for a short period of time. Deemed “Dead Day” (not to be confused with “Day of the Dead”), those who are still amongst the living world are given an opportunistic visit from someone who has died. This visit lasts from sun down to sun up and those who are revived spend their precious moments with their loved ones…or seek the revenge they’ve waited so long to exact.

This horror tale tackles interesting topics that would make for excellent discussion points. Dead Day characters are tasked with dealing with death, grief, the afterlife, religion, and family dynamics. Despite the macabre, Dead Day shines in the art department–Bornyakov’s character designs and attention to background detail immerse the reader in a world where you’re unsure whether to be frightened or excited for the Dead to arrive.

This title is recommended for ages 15+. As expected with stories about the undead, there is some violence and gore that the creators don’t shy away from. Teens will find this relatable as a main character goes through the trials and tribulations of not wanting to be treated like child. Adults will find some commonality in the discussions of parenting, marriage, and death throughout the plot. Fans of zombie and horror stories will find Dead Day a nice diversion from the status quo!
