Graphic Novel Review: Two Moons (Vol. 1)

Ages: Mature

If you’re looking for a graphic novel with some historical relevance along with a dash of horror, Two Moons delivers both genres in a way that entertains and educates.

A Pawnee man who has strayed from his family’s roots due to an unfortunate event in his childhood is given guidance by his deceased grandfather about the demons who are among them. An already horrendous war becomes downright terrifying as Two Moons (Virgil) fights against what cannot be seen by others at first–all while battling the bigoted stereotypes of the Native American.

Two Moons is an interesting graphic novel as it blends history with horror in a way that makes it an engaging read from the first page to last. A mature offering from Image Comics, this title is recommended to be enjoyed by those 17 and older. It can become quite graphic and gory, with illustrations that depict the fallen bodies of war along with the gruesome maimings inflicted on and by the creatures that wreak havoc in Virgil’s mind.

The art is quite fitting for the atmosphere of the story. With thin strokes of ink and a dusky palette, the sepia backgrounds will make the reader feel as if they’re deep in the blazing sun of a western. Native American protagonists are far and few between in graphic novels–the representation thus far is promising, as Virgil spends most of the tale being grounded by the history of his people and coming to terms with his special gift. The storytelling keeps the reader’s attention, dabbles in history and indigenous American influences, and overall makes Two Moons worthy of taking a chance on.
