Graphic Novel Review: Twig Vol. 1

Posted on October 3, 2022October 4, 2022

Published by: Image Comics

Written by: Skottie Young

Illustrated by: Kyle Strahm

ISBN: 9781534323469

Ages:12+

Twig is late for his new job.

Picking up where his father left off, this adorable blue creature, with a small twig growing out of the top of his head, has taken the role of Placeling. This is no mere task, as a placeling’s job involves questing to place an item of significance exactly where it needs to be before its use and purpose are made known. Together with his friend and blob-like companion Splat, Twig makes for the Pathsayer, who shows where the item is supposed to go.

…But what happened to the Pathsayer?

If you have read anything from Skottie Young (I HATE FAIRYLAND, MIDDLEWEST) before, you know that you are in for quite the wild ride. A combination of likable characters, well thought out plotlines, and a bright and vibrant world are essential to his stories. Adding illustrator Kyle Straum (UNEARTH) gives it a slightly different visual flavor, but I spent many minutes pouring over all the detail of this alien world.

Though it appears as if the story is over for our hero, the words “Twig Will Return” shine brightly on the final page. I’ll be very interested to take a trip through this magical world again.
