Graphic Novel Review: The Me You Love in the Dark

Ages: Mature (18+)

When an artist seeks solace out of the city for inspiration for her art, she finds much more than she bargained for in her newly acquired spooky home.

The Me You Love in the Dark follows Rowena as she settles away from the hustle and bustle of city life to find her muse. Struggling with meeting the obligations for her gallery exhibit and an agent pressing her to churn out some worthy pieces, Ro spends her days at an easel–drawing a blank when it comes to inspiration. It doesn’t take long for the “haunted” to come out of the house, turning what began as a frightful encounter to one that evolves into an unexpected companionship. Painting again, Ro is delighted with her newfound company but soon finds that tempting darkness was perhaps not the best way to stimulate her creativity.

Fans of Middlewest will find the dynamic duo of Skottie Young & Jorge Corona back yet again with an engaging plot and pleasing visual storytelling. A quick read at less than 130 pages, The Me You Love in the Dark still packs a wallop as it transforms from the unassuming cliché of haunted house shenanigans into plain out horror. The palettes of darkness throughout the story is a pleasing one, with deep blues and blacks to paint the scenes as cold as the creature that torments Ro.

This title is rated Mature for adult readers, as the subject matter of this graphic novel depicts scenes of violence, horror, abuse, and some sexual content. However, The Me You Love in the Dark can be enjoyed by fans of horror, drama, and even paranormal romance. The end of the book also features bonus content, including character sketches, storyboard samples, and even the planned layout and blueprint for Ro’s haunted house.
