“It’s not about how long you live, it’s about how you use that life.”

When those words are spoken in this penultimate Volume of SUMMERTIME RENDERING, we readers will know that we are officially in the endgame. But before that…

We begin with a time of planning and rest. The secrets of Dr. Hishigata have been shared and there’s not much time left for Shinpei and our other heroes. Heine and her shadowy guardian Shideh have one day left before the festival where they plan to finalize the reign of the shadows and get Heine the necessary food and energy she needs to go back to her dark and watery home. Standing in her way:

– a teen boy who can only loop so many times

– the shadow clone of his dead foster sister

– his other foster sister and her shadow clone

– an old man, the shadow of a cop, and a forgiven traitor

– and fighting master/author who is possessed by the spirit of her dead brother

Quite a peculiar gang, if I’ve ever seen one.

Questions need to be answered and there are still secrets left to reveal. Chief amongst those? What all does Karikiri, Head Priest of the Haruko Shrine, know about Heine and shadow sickness?

Five Volumes down, one left to go. Yasuki Tanaka’s masterpiece is a thrill ride of a story, containing enough action, drama, and mystery to entertain any reader. With Disney Japan already cranking out the anime, SUMMERTIME RENDERING is sure to be a title crossing many paths this year, both on page and screen.

… but will Shinpei be able to save us all?
