Graphic Novel Review: Summertime Rendering Vol. 2

Posted on February 1, 2022April 11, 2022

Published by: UDON Entertainment
Written by: Yasuki Tanaka
Illustrated by: Yasuki Tanaka
ISBN: 9781772942392
Ages: 15+

Having come home to simply pay respects to his recently deceased friend and foster sister Ushio, Shinpei probably never expected to be caught in a time-loop, reliving the same 3 days over and over. “Shadow sickness” has fully taken over the small island town, replacing the people with murderous clones of themselves, which can only be determined by stepping on their shadow. The shadows can be stopped, but not easily.

Taking the viewpoint of Hizuru Minakata, an author who has come home to write a story and investigate into shadow sickness, we see another side of the events of the first Volume. Watching Shinpei on his 4th time through the three days, Hizuru is connected as deep as he is into the people, but armed with knowledge and a trusty sledgehammer, her path will need to interact directly with his if anyone is going to survive what’s coming.

Does Shiori, the little girl that Ushio died saving, have anything to do with the shadows?

What is the story behind Hizuru’s pen name, Ryunosuke Nagumo?

And is that really Ushio coming up behind Shinpei in the kitchen? I thought she was dead…

Yasuki Tanaka brings us another action-packed and mystery-filled Volume of SUMMERTIME RENDERING. This series and the anime that is being created from it, will be popular, so you owe it to yourself to jump in on this early. I love all the twists and turns and look forward to reading future Volumes. Appropriate for ages 15 and up.

Don’t peel your eyes away from the page, or you might find a shadow standing behind you…

NOTE: This is an Omnibus version, printing the third and fourth original Volumes.
