Graphic Novel Review: Radiant Black Volume 1

Posted on October 11, 2021

Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Kyle Higgins
Illustrated by: Marcelo Costa
ISBN: 9781534319165
Ages: 14+

Nathan Burnett is moving back in with his parents. The thirty year old is stuck in a rut at two jobs, he’s got incredible credit card debt, and he feels like a failure, his writing career not going as well as he might have hoped. The scene is one we are familiar with, complete with understanding mom, the “get a job” dad, and the friend from high school who you can go get drunk with. But his luck will soon turn…

Walking home one night, Nathan stumbles upon a hovering black cosmic orb. In true superhero comic fashion, he touches it and is gifted with strength, flight, and a host of other powers. But what comes next? Will he be a hero or villain? Save the day or use his powers for evil? What about the intelligence that has begun to communicate with him? Or the red variant of his same suit, who seems to want to kill him? Nathan’s life as RADIANT BLACK will never be the same.

This fantastic start to a new series was the perfect hybrid of familiar and new. Kyle Higgins (MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS, ULTRAMAN) brings us a new title that Robert Kirkman says is “The perfect superhero comic for anyone missing Invincible.” I not only agree, but would encourage anyone who enjoys superhero comics and graphic novels to pick this one up.
