Graphic Novel Review: Public Domain Volume 1: Past Mistakes

Posted on January 11, 2023January 11, 2023

Written by: Chip Zdarsky

Illustrated by: Chip Zdarsky

ISBN: 9781534324572

Long ago, Jerry and Syd created a comic book character known as “The Domain”. It ran for a long time, and became popular. Just like in our world, when a superhero becomes popular, it will eventually head for the movie screen. Jerry and Syd haven’t spoken for years, and Syd’s son Miles is a reporter who gets assigned to cover cast interviews for the release of “Eminent Domain”, the superhero origin movie for the character.

There are several problems. Jerry “owns” the character and the rights and has made tons of money off of it all. Syd refuses to stand up for himself and his involvement, and it has caused problems in his marriage. Miles is in huge gambling debt, unbeknownst to his father. AND Singular Studios knows the value of the property they have, keeping their eye on the box office revenue.

What will happen when the ownership of The Domain is called into question by an older missing document?

With previous titles like SEX CRIMINALS, Chip Zdarsky is a comic book author who excels at  pushing boundaries and making memorable stories. With this first Volume of PUBLIC DOMAIN, he draws attention to the very industry he is a part of, calling out possible injustices in ownership rights stemming from our culture’s obsession with superhero movies, and the often opposing opinions of comic book readers. Regardless of where he ultimately stands on the issue, Zdarsky has created a story that will entertain all readers… as well as have you asking questions.
