Graphic Novel Review: MANGA CLASSICS: Frankenstein

Posted on April 16, 2021April 16, 2021

Frankenstein

Published by: UDON Entertainment
Written by: M. Chandler, Mary Shelley
Illustrated by: Linus Liu
ISBN: 9781947808164
Ages: 15+

Frankenstein. Whether you are talking about the monster or the scientist, everyone seems to know some version of the tale. One may hold up arms and waddle towards you while groaning. Another may show you the suit coat and neck bolts they wore for a Halloween party. Still another may start over pronouncing the word as FRAHN-KEN-STEEN or humming “Putting on the Ritz” from the popular Mel Brooks movie. Most librarians and bibliophiles will direct you to the Classics section and hand you an old novel by Mary Shelley.

This version of the story takes the original 1818 version of Shelley’s work “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” and brings it to life in the manga format. Not deviating from the source material, including using the language of the time, and creating illustrations inspired by the descriptions in the novel, FRANKENSTEIN seeks to replicate the original as close as possible.

Part of the MANGA CLASSICS series, these stories are intended to use the popular manga format to encourage readers to experience classic literature while catering to the more visual format. Having read several others of these, I can attest to their very close comparison with their original works.

If you have someone who would benefit from reading a classic novel, but they prefer a more visual style, have them check out FRANKENSTEIN or any of the other MANGA CLASSICS. I recommend them wholeheartedly. Ages 15+
