Janis Joplin continues to stand the test of time with the latest NBM comics biography release.

Love Me Please! is a psychedelic adventure that not only marks the pivotal points in Joplin’s career, but describes just how she got there. From humble beginnings, being raised by a strict mother, and living in a world in which she felt she didn’t belong in an ordinary way, Janis struggled with her own demons but led a life that many could only imagine of.

The dialogue, crafted as a heartfelt narration by Janis’ parent, chronicles the highs and lows of the singer’s life. Writer Nicolas Finet makes the biography digestible by including vivid recounts of her story in the form of engaging dialogue between the “characters.” Major plot points of the graphic novel includes interactions Janis had with other well known artists of that time period, growing up and not quite knowing what you want or not fitting in, and Joplin’s struggle with drug abuse that led to her untimely demise. Christopher’s illustrations depict Janis and the surrounding people in her life and in the music business quite accurately, with famed performances and photos recreated for the graphic novel format. Colors are vivid, matching the mood of 1960s “hippie” counterculture movement.

Whether a fan of the artist or not being sure who Janis Joplin is, Love Me Please! is a graphic biography that will surely interest fans of popular culture and music. Recommended for ages 15 and up, this title depicts drug use, sexual acts/nudity, and some obscene/offensive language. At the end, the creators provide an informative collection of readings, films, and websites that the reader may find useful when wanting to delve into Joplin’s talent further. Resources will allow those who are interested to view photos, performances, and more details about her life and career. As a bonus, they’ve also included brief bios of the notable figures who were included in the book.
