When you begin reading Long Haul, you aren’t exactly sure where or at what time period you are at. It could be modern day, slightly in the past, or even some kind of post-apocalyptic Mad Max-esque future. The scene starts in a desert along Route 66, and is kind of gruesome in that a group of 4 people are buried up to their necks in sand. The antagonist seems to have the situation well in hand… until a semi truck pulls up at the edge of his property.
This is when we meet Danny and Carl, two brothers who have taken to the road to find their sister Sarah. Last seen getting into a semi, she never made it to work, and these brothers will stop at nothing to make sure she is found safe. Unfortunately, they have set off a group of very violent and crazy truckers, who identify themselves as “The Nine”, and their quest to find Sarah will be long, and very bloody.
Storm King Comics is published by filmmaker Sandy King and her legendary director of a husband John Carpenter. Through their various short series, including this line “Dark & Twisted”, Storm King is quickly establishing themselves as a must for fans of horror comics. When you combine their talents with that of Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, Deadpool) as storyteller, you know you are in for a wild ride, which is exactly what Long Haul delivers.
The art in this graphic novel tells most of the story here. Very gory and intense. Gritty, violent, and at times pure anarchy, this comic will delight many fans, but is not recommended for anyone under the age of 15.
