Graphic Novel Review: Inkblot Vol. 1

Posted on June 10, 2021June 10, 2021

Inkblot Volume 1

Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Emma Kubert
Illustrated by: Rusty Gladd
ISBN: 9781534318243
Ages: 12+

They say that magic always comes with a price. Our narrator, The Seeker, a sorceress, scientist, magical practitioner and historian, knows this well. But… everyone makes mistakes. Her “mistake” manifests itself as a black cat, drawn up from the inky blackness of the Void. Though the cat is adorable with its huge eyes and rambunctious demeanor, Seeker knows it will be great trouble for her and her family.

What she doesn’t know is that this cat can create portals between worlds, time travel, summon magical creatures, and seems to be involved in more of her past than she realized. Yet, somehow, anytime the cat shows up in the story, things of a serious or chaotic nature begin to become humorous for us readers, leaving us always wanting to see what the cat will do next.

INKBLOT VOL 1 is a fun ride, filled with the hijinks of a cat video, ran through the filter of an epic fantasy story. Author Emma Kubert, in her debut title, has tapped into something that has the ability to “go viral” in the realm of graphic novels… AND there is so much more to come! Will The Seeker be able to harness the power of the Cat to save her family and their past? What will this mean for the present?

And why are huge eyes on a cat so freaking adorable?!
