Graphic Novel Review: Grimm Tales From the Cave

Posted on October 11, 2021

ISBN: 9781952303241
Ages: 14+

When we think of fairy tales, depending on who you talk to, most people will go towards the fun and musical Disney tales, or the dark and foreboding original stories of the Brothers Grimm that they were based on. GRIMM TALES FROM THE CAVE goes the darker route, even adding some new characters and unpredictable twists.

“Soldiers of Fortune” teaches us the joys and consequences of making a deal with the devil. A rodent infested apartment building teaches the super that to “Pay the Piper” may be way more than he bargained for. “Mother’s Thorn” shows just how twisted a tale with a wicked stepmother can be. Family drama with a creepy uncle and lots of self-reflection dominate the tale of “The Girl With Dirty Hands”. With a genie at your command, you should be careful what you wish for, after all “No Good Deed” goes unpunished.

… And those are just sneak peeks at half the stories you will find in this horror anthology by Mad Cave Studios. They pulled the talent (authors and illustrators) for these tales from the winners of a 2020 talent search held by the company, and threw in some heavy hitters of the comic world (Cullen Bunn, Mark London, Stephanie Phillips, etc) for good measure. With horror comics always seeming to do well, GRIMM TALES FROM THE CAVE should be no exception.

16+ for content and gore.
