Graphic Novel Review: Coffin Bound Volume 1: Happy Ashes

Posted on February 8, 2021February 8, 2021

Coffin Bound

Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Dan Watters
Illustrated by: DaNi
ISBN: 9781534313743
Ages: 18+

“Rather than die, I shall unlive.”

Izzy is a woman who lives in a semi-post-apocalyptic world. Eartheater, a disgusting villain who does exactly what his name entails, has sent goons to kill her. After defending herself with ease, she informs Vulture, her raven-skull-headed companion, that she is ready to unlive, proclaiming us all ‘coffin bound’, and is heading out to destroy all traces of herself from the world, so that she may fade away.

That story is all in the first 5 or so pages!

With the premise set, we readers are now strapped in tight and along for the ride.

Readers will find out very quickly that the world of COFFIN BOUND is not for the faint of heart, or the tame. This world is adult and the comic itself contains blood, nudity, extreme violence and language. While at times it can seem a bit gratuitous (the part about the strippers at the club stripping not only their clothes, but also their skin comes to mind), the story is compelling. Author Dan Watters (LUCIFER, LIMBO) and artist DaNi (TALES FROM THE STRIPS) paint a picture that is slow to deal out backstory, but keeps chugging along at a steady pace so well that when I got to the end, I immediately wanted more, as it did leave off on a cliffhanger.

This new macabre comic from Image Comics has a new fan. Can’t wait for the next issue!
