Boarding schools always come with their own challenges, but La Rosa School For Girls is especially challenging because if you break the rules you end up either expelled or dead. When you add in a sorcerous secret society, the setting is prime for this sapphic dark academic romance tale.
A central theme to the story, the tale of Eros and Psyche is retold here through the unique relationship between Silje, the Key Student, and Sara, the new girl. The myth as we know it describes how a relationship between a very beautiful woman and the God of Love starts by accident, but becomes extremely powerful despite the odds. The same is true with Silje and Sara who meet while investigating a part of the school grounds where neither of them should be, and whose love becomes powerful, thriving in a situation where education is meant to be the main focus.
Maria Llovet acts as author (HEARTBEAT, LUNA) and illustrator (FAITHLESS, PORCELAIN) here, bringing her unique visual style, almost reminiscent of fashion design, to the page. While EROS/PSYCHE won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, fans of young romance or love mixed with a little magic will find something in the pages of this imported work. Mature themes and minimalist dialogue places readers around 16 and up.
