Graphic Novel Reviews: Needle and Thread

Needle & Thread by David Pinckney and new artist Ennun Ana Iueov is a story about finding the support you need to live your truth, even if the path is not an easy one. It is senior year and Noah and Azarie are on two vastly different paths. While they know each other, it is not until they see one another outside of their high school confines that they recognize that their lives can intersect in a way that is beneficial to both of them.

Noah loves to sew and wants more than anything to become a costume designer. His parents, however, have different ideas for him. They see his creations as an interesting hobby but never a career path. Azarie is the daughter of a powerful entertainment lawyer and politician. As such she is expected to be a part of the campaign and forced to leave her true interests a secret – acting, gaming, and cosplay. She wants to go to drama school while Noah has his heart set on a prestigious arts college. Their chance meeting sets the scene for a budding friendship.

The path to friendship doesn’t always run smooth, especially when you are finding your place in the world. Noah and Azarie hit some rough patches, find some people who share their dreams and aspirations, and attend a comic/cosplay convention that changes their lives.

Needle & Thread is a fantastic read for younger teens and up, especially those interested in artsy and “geeky” pastimes. The art style is delightful and fresh and the story is poignant, even for adult readers.
