Old Head

Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Kyle Starks
Illustrated by: Kyle Starks
ISBN:  9781534320741
Ages: Mature

The description for Kyle Stark’s Old Head mentioned Fright Night (a favorite vampire movie of my youth) and Space Jam (90’s Michael Jordan version) and all I could think was, “I did not know I needed this in my life until this very moment” and boy did I!

Nash “The Knife” Gliven, Jr., is a retired basketball player who is remembered on the court for his aggressive play style, a state of mind that came to dominate his entire life. Raised without a father, Nash was encouraged to play basketball from a young age where he unfortunately learned a masculinity that is more toxic than not. The one spot where he lets his guard down is with his daughter, who he loves dearly.

Nash’s mother carefully guarded her past from her son leading to a big surprise when he went home to bury her. Never in a million years did this Old Head believe that a trip to his childhood home would result in a fight with Dracula and his band of pick-up artists vampires.

Get ready to laugh out loud as some of the over the top action. Old Head is an entertaining romp that is better left to more mature readers. The art style is fun and lends to the zaniness of the story.

My interest in all things graphic storytelling began at a young age when my mom used to buy Family Circle and Dennis the Menace collections. I devoured them and especially loved the ones that had the flip-book bonus on the bottom pages! It was love at first flip; ever since then, I have been hooked.
