As more and more people die from the Summer Flu, the government starts blocking people off into containment zones. But the food is scarce, the supplies are dwindling, and now not even the military is doing anything to stop people from murdering one another over a can of beans. With nothing left to eat, a father and his two kids use the last of their gas to leave the city, heading into areas that are even more lawless than the quarantine zones. But there is no escaping the horrors of the desperate people left in this dystopian graphic novel.
In this dark and timely graphic novel, author Muralt paints a grim view of humanity when there is no more food, medicine, or safe shelter. The story of this father and his two kids, plus the baby they adopt as they escape the city, is compelling and heartbreaking. An interesting mix between the current pandemic and the lawlessness of the Walking Dead, the world of The Fall doesn’t seem so farfetched, which makes it that much more of a gritty, dark read. The art fits the tone, with muted colors. It may not be a fun read, but it is definitely one that will stick with you.
Recommended for ages 16 and above due to violence.
