Embodied: An Intersectional Comics Poetry Anthology, published by A Wave Blue World, collects poetry written and illustrated by cis-female, trans, and non-binary people who share their works in hopes that the reader can gather a sense of the worlds that they’ve lived and the worlds that are contained within them.
This anthology features poetry illustrated in sequential format, adding visual depth to the words the authors present. Each poem describes a feeling, a past, an experience, and so much more. The artworks, varying by poem, range from the delightfully gorgeous to the awe-inspiring. It’s an interesting compilation that may assist those who are not quite apt to reading poetry. Reluctant readers may find this format of poetic storytelling appealing, as well. For fans of prose, the added bonus of illustration may further invoke perspective and enjoyment of this form of literature.
Additionally, Embodied contains study guides for each of the poems at the end of the book! This would prove ideal for educators, book clubs, and parents who may want to discuss elements of a particular poem. The reader will also find author and creator biographies as well as bonus art features showing the illustration process for each poem.
The subject matter of each poem varies, and some topics touched upon include workplace/sexual harassment, the loss of a child, and thoughts of self-harm/suicide. There is brief nudity and some sexual content. Embodied is recommended for ages 16 and older. Even so, this anthology serves as an amazing collection of marginalized voices, includes illustrations of a diverse range of people, and some stories are so moving that they may stir your heart and cause a tear or two to shed.
